African Exploration and Travel
The challenges and danger that the early African explorers experienced is difficult to imagine. They persevered through unmapped territory peopled with often hostile native tribes still living in the Iron Age, and often facing disease and starvation.
Examine the photos carefully as they are an integral part of the description.

Baker, Samuel. Albert Nyanza, the Great Basin of the Nile |
|
1868 printing of 1866 first edition. Very good. 499 pages with index. Two maps and over 40 illustrations. Baker was in search of the source of the Nile in Central Africa. When he met Speke and Grant at Khartoum and heard they established Lake Victoria as the source of the White Nile, he continued on and discovered that the Albert Nyanza was the source of the Blue Nile. An amazing story of exploration and hunting in Central Africa. His "wife" accompanied him and saved his life! But that, as they say, is another story. |

Burton, Richard. Lake Regions of Central Africa |
|
1961 reprint of Burton's 1861 book describing his travels with Speke to find the source of the Nile, as depicted in the film "Mountains of the Moon". Burton could not continue with Speke to Lake Victoria and challenged Speke's assertion that it was the source of the Nile because he had not explored the entire perimeter of the lake. Very good in fair DJs and good slipcases. |

Stanley, H.M. In Darkest Africa |
|

Vol 1: 547 pages w/appendix. 75 illustrations. "Rippling" of pages of appendix without stain. Repaired hole in spine cloth. Lacks map in pocket. Vol 2: 540 pages w/index and appendix. 73 illustrations. Gilt title on front cover a bit faded. "Rippling" of pages of Chapter index and list of illustrations without discoloration. Contains both maps in pocket as called for.
One of the great African adventure stories describing Stanley's campaign to rescue Emin Pasha (Dr. Eduard Schnitzer), the governor of Equatoria (present day Sudan), who was besieged by Mahdist zealots. Stanley lost about two-thirds of the expedition's members due to disease, starvation and desertion. Stanley wrote these books in 55 days. He included his officers' reports and conversations to provide a complete account of the expedition, perhaps anticipating the criticism that occurred later. |
