I've been bird hunting with my Brittanies for over 40 years and my recommendations for bird hunting books for your library are: anything by Havilah Babcock (particularly My Health is Better in November), anything by Gene Hill (especially A Hunter's Fireside Book and Mostly Tail Feathers), anything by Nash Buckingham (especially Tattered Coat), Jenny Willow (by Mike Gaddis) is probably the best bird dog novel ever written and as good as Cory Ford's short story The Road to Tinkhamtown, The Trickiest Thing in Feathers (Ford), Shotgunning in the Uplands (Holland), Traveler's Tales (McIntosh), The Old Man and the Boy (my favorite by Ruark), and Brush, Bobs, and Brittanies (Joel Vance).
For duck hunters: Shotgunning in the Lowlands (Holland), A Book on Duck Shooting (Heilner), anything by Nash Buckingham (especially De Shootinest Gent'man), Gunner's Dawn (Clark), and Stories of the Old Duck Hunters (trilogy by Gordon MacQuarrie).
Examine the photos carefully as they are an integral part of the description.

Babcock, H. The Best of Babcock |
|
1974 First Edition. Very Good in very good slipcase. Indentation top edge of rear cover (see photo). Havilah Babcock was the chairman of the English department at the University of South Carolina. But, as he would readily admit, he was mostly a bird hunter. He was one of the foremost outdoor writers of the mid-twentieth century, ranking with Buckingham, Ruark, and Corey Ford. Many of his stories are humorous, others instructional. This book contains his best stories from Field and Stream, My Health Is Better In November, Tales of Quails and Such, Jaybirds Go To Hell On Friday, I Don't Want To Shoot An Elephant, and The Education Of Pretty Boy. Copies offered on-line for in excess of $103. |

Ruark, R. The Old Man and the Boy |
|
1957 First edition. Poor (and priced accordingly). 303 pages with drawings. Some staining of front cover and top of text block. Some rippling of cloth of front cover. Text is clean. The pages are "wavy" on top possibly from liquid which struck top of text block, but there is no staining of pages. Crimping of back cover at spine (as seen in photo of top of text block). Tightly bound. Lacks dust jacket. The only reason that I am listing this is because it's such a darn good book and it's my favorite by Ruark. Stories of his relationship with his maternal grandfather with whom he spent a lot of time. His grandfather taught him to hunt and fish and taught him the code that makes a man. The last line in the book is " 'I promise you', the Old Man said, 'on my word of honor, I won't die on the first day of the bird season'. He kept his promise." |

Ruark, R. The Old Man's Boy Grows Older |
|
1961 First Edition. Near fine. Signature on FFEP. Minimal bumping of head and tail of spine. Lacks dust jacket. 302 pages. Illustrated with drawings. Upon his grandfather's passing Ruark reminisces on their adventures and also on the adventures he has had as an adult. Almost as good as The Old Man and the Boy. |
