Gene Hill was probably one of the most beloved and widely read outdoor writers of the late 20th century. He wrote for "everyman", often with self-deprating humor. He put front and center his own supposed inadequacies in the field and on the stream. As a matter of fact he was an editor for Field and Stream magazine and his column "Hill Country" entertained readers for years. He also provided the final column "Mostly Tailfeathers" of Sports Afield prior to that. Though he often made fun of his trap shooting he was an excellent shot. His stories of the give-and-take between him and his wife regarding a new gun or puppy are hilarious. Altogether he wrote ten books and numerous magazine articles.
