Other Big Game Hunting Books
To really enjoy hunting big game today one should have an idea of what hunting was like 150 or so years ago.
After more than 40 years of hunting big game and reading hunting books, my recommendations for the books that every hunter of North American big game should have in his/her library are: The Wilderness Hunter (Roosevelt), Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter (Roosevelt), Hunting Trips of a Ranchman (Roosevelt), Hunting (Grinnell, Rainsford, et al.), American Big Game Hunting (Boone and Crockett Club), Recent Hunting Trips in British North America (Selous), Tales of a Big Game Guide (Annabel), Campfires and Game Trails (Boddington), Jack O'Connor's Big Game Hunts, and Elmer Keith's Big Game Hunting. Of course there are literally hundreds of other books, but these are among my favorites.
A book is a first edition if it is so stated on the copyright page, and, usually, if the year on the title page is the same as the copyright.
Examine the photos carefully as they are an integral part of the description.

Seery-Lester, J. Legends of the Hunt |
|
2009 First Trade Edition. Like new in near fine DJ (there is a barely visible scratch on the rear panel. See photo). 200 pages with 108 full page color plates (of which 5 are double page). Title and author are blind stamped on front cover and spine. Signed by author. Contains stories of the man eaters of Tsavo, Roosevelt's 1909-1910 safari, Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, Ernest Hemingway, and others. Each one accompanied by paintings depicting aspects of the story line. It is rare to have an internationally acclaimed artist who is also a good writer. The only other person I can think of who fits in that category is John G. Millais who wrote and illustrated "A Breath from the Veldt" in 1895. The first of Sir John Seery-Lester's books. He recently passed so demand for his works will grow. A great read with great artwork. This is a large book: 12 in. by 11 in. |
